The RCA connector is a plug and a socket, designed to be used with coaxial cables, with frequencies ranging from very low to very high several MHz. The RCA connector is sometimes referred to as a phonograph plug and socket.

The male RCA plug consists of a central nail with a diameter of approximately 2 mm and a shell with an inner diameter of 6 mm. The plug shell is slotted instead of decorated with linear patterns to facilitate quick insertion or removal of female jacks or sockets. Physical pressure keeps the slot shell of the plug in contact with the smooth cylindrical barrel of the socket. The plug shell and the outer layer of the coaxial cable are connected together, usually at the ground pole. The nail in the center of the plug is connected to the center cable conductor that transmits the signal. In the socket, the barrel is grounded, and the center hole is gilded to transmit signals.
